Barcelona has a new hero. The 17-year-old debutant scored the first goal after 23 seconds to secure victory over Athletic
It’s hard to imagine a better start to a career. Only 17-year-old Marc Guiu made his first appearance for Barcelona’s A-team on Sunday and scored the only goal of the game against Athletic after just 23 seconds on the pitch.
It’s hard to imagine a better start to a career. Only 17-year-old Marc Guiu made his first appearance for Barcelona’s A-team on Sunday and scored the only goal of the game against Athletic after just 23 seconds on the pitch.
The classic question arises – “what did you do when you were 17?” The answer for most of you probably won’t be making your debut for Barcelona. But that’s exactly what the youngster from the famous La Masia academy has done.
At 17 years and 291 days, Marc Guiu has become a hero. Barcelona were struggling at home against Athletic, they couldn’t score a goal the whole game and it was slowly heading towards a draw.
Xavi is also struggling with a major illness, leaving Lewandowski and Raphinha out of the attack, while Koundé, Pedri, De Jong and S. Roberto are also out. The only 17 year old Guiu was on the bench and Xavi decided to send him on in the 79th minute.
And he probably could hardly have gotten a better response. Guiu immediately ran in behind the defence and received a beautiful pass from João Félix, raced in alone on goal and fired past national team goalkeeper Unaia Simon.

After just 23 seconds, he made the decisive breakthrough in Barcelona’s important victory over Athletic. The Blaugranas will welcome Real Madrid in El Clásico next week and it will definitely be better to go into it with a one-point loss than a three-point deficit.
Moreover, at 17 years and 291 days, Guiu became the youngest Barcelona player to score on his La Liga debut. Sunday night’s hero may very well become a fan favourite very quickly. Before the game he had 98,000 followers on Instagram, now he has 470,000 followers.
Xavi has thus pulled out his second La Masia pearl this season. Since the beginning of the season, Lamine Yamal, only 16 years old, has been astonishing with his performances.
