Barcelona did not start the new season as expected. In the very first round, they only played a goalless draw at Getafe and coach Xavi had a lot to think about.
In the second round it was a bit better, the Catalans took on Cadiz at their temporary home Estadio Olímpico and won 2-0. In the third round, however, they had a trip to Villarreal, who can be a nasty opponent.
This was proved in the duel. In the 15th minute, Barcelona were already two goals up, but in the 40th minute it was tied at 2-2. Five minutes after the start of the second half, Villarreal took the lead and turned the game around.
However, Barcelona did not give up. Goals in the 68th and 71st minutes gave them a 4:3 lead, which they held on to. The scorers for the Catalans were Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, Ferran Torres and Robert Lewandowski.
However, the name of the biggest hero is missing from the scorers. Lamine Yamal, who only celebrated his 16th birthday in the first half of July, shone from the start.
The talented Barcelona gem provided an assist for Gavi’s goal and also shone in Lewandowska’s goal after he made a fine run to the end and hit the bar, with the Polish sharpshooter scoring from the rebound.
Yamal was named player of the match. When Ansu Fati replaced him in the 76th minute, he even received a round of applause from the Villarreal home fans, which only underlines what an exceptional performance the skilful winger put in at his young age.
