When the news came out in 2021 that Lionel Messi was leaving Barcelona, it was a huge shock. But perhaps an even bigger shock was finding out why it was happening. For the club was beginning to drown in a major financial crisis where it could not afford to bring in new players or even re-sign existing ones.
The problems continued in the years that followed and did not just go away. In fact, club president Joan Laporta decided to sell off the club’s future to pay off the current debts. Even so, Barcelona is struggling to fit into the salary cap that La Liga sets for each club individually to avoid bankruptcy.
At the moment, it has only 16 players on its roster for the new season, while the roster could be as high as 25 names. The management will have a very difficult time with reinforcements, but they have offered one name on a golden platter.
At the Euro in Germany, Spain was led to triumph by the attacking duo of winger Lamine Yamal – Nico Williams. The Athletic striker is in demand all over the world, but at the championship it became clear that he has great chemistry with the Barcelona youngster both on and off the pitch and together they would pose a huge threat to the opposition’s defence, just as they did at the championship.
The problem, however, is the price tag. Williams, like any Bilbao-born player, is a proud Leones player and has promised the management that if he leaves, it will be for the transfer fee the club deserves. So he signed a new contract at the end of 2023 with a buyout clause of just under €60 million.
Support from the fans
So the number one topic in Catalonia all summer will be whether Barcelona can pull off a miracle and afford the arrival of the Euro star. But the fans really want the rising Spanish starlet and so they have decided to help the club.
On the Tiktok platform, you can send a so-called “donation”, i.e. any amount of money to support the creator. Well, Blaugranas fans have decided to help the club’s management in this way.
They started to send money to Barcelona regularly with captions like “for Nico Williams” or “Please buy Nico”. You can find financial contributions from supporters next to every Catalan post.
Spanish newspaper El Larguero reported on Friday morning that Barcelona will take out a loan to pay off Williams’ clause. The question is whether the Culés can scrape themselves out of the pressing situation, or whether it will have unpleasant consequences in the future.
