Barcelona did not play for promotion. They rightly got three goals against Bayern and say goodbye to the Champions League

For Barcelona, this year’s Champions League ends in December. One of the most successful football teams in history lost to Bayern Munich in the last round of the group stage and will only play in the Europa League in the spring.

Bayern looked sleepy from the start of the match, with only Leroy Sané’s failed direct kick worth mentioning. But it was the visitors who had to play. The Catalans, however, did not play, just waited to see what the opponent would do.

In the 28th minute, the home side could have taken the lead, but Thomas Muller’s centre to Robert Lewandowski was saved at the last moment by Marc-André ter Stegen.

Nine minutes later, Sané smashed a hard shot into the net from distance and Barcelona’s chances of advancing fell to zero. They did nothing to turn the result around, going into the cabins with a 0:2 scoreline.

On the other hand, after the change of sides, they first survived a Sané chance and in the 63rd minute got the third nail in the coffin from a Jamal Musiala shot.

After that, the game was just a game of play, Barcelona players were frustrated, often fouling unnecessarily. Xavi’s charges returned to Spain with a 0:3 defeat.

With Benfica beating Dynamo Kiev 2:0 in a match played in the same season, Barcelona will go into the Europa League play-offs with seven points. The Portuguese side, on the other hand, will enjoy at least two more Champions League matches in the spring.
