Barcelona has not announced exactly how much it will earn from the Spotify deal. However, details of the new sponsorship deal are known. The club will get more than this season, but less than from the previous collaboration with Rakuten, unless they get another sponsor. What are Barcelona’s revenues compared to other European giants?
Mundo Deportivo journalist Fernando Polo was the first to report the possible deal with Spotify and now reveals the details of the contract. The Blaugranas will receive 57.5 million euros a year for displaying the company’s name on the front of men’s and women’s jerseys. A further €5 million for advertising on training wear.
For the rights with the Camp Nou renaming, Barcelona will receive 5 million euros a year. The contract in this regard is for six seasons. Polo also states that Barcelona could earn an additional €2.5 million for “good practices in the activation of the contract”.
The journalist does not explain the details of this addendum, but one can suspect that it is about the club’s relationship with the sponsor and cooperation on other projects.
Spotify is also asking Barcelona for the right to resell advertising space on the first team’s jerseys from the third year of the contract, the last two years of the deal. The company could thus respond if it finds the agreement with Barcelona to be unprofitable or simply wants to make money from the resale of the contract.
Ultimately, the Catalan big club has veto power and will not accept a potential new sponsor that would be contrary to its values.
On the stadium naming rights, it should be noted that the facility will be under renovation for the duration of the contract, which reduces the price. After these six years, Spotify will be able to extend the contract for fifteen years and its future value is estimated at between EUR 15 and 20 million per year. Here too, the companies have asked Barcelona for an amendment to resell these rights.
Better than it is, worse than it was
Barcelona is happy with the deal, even if it is not the best option on the market. However, it appreciates that the deal will have a very positive impact on the club’s image and that it is associated with a world leader in its sector. In any case, the contract means a significant increase in revenues for Barcelona, as this season it has received 44 million euros from sponsors (30 from Rakuten, 10 from Beko and 4 from Stanley) after renegotiating the contracts.
Earlier contracts secured revenues of €79.5 million, but the club could still get close to that amount if it sold some of the sleeves on the first team jerseys. The back of the training wear is still free, unless Spotify has also secured those rights. Recall that until 2021, Beko paid 20 million euros for the front of the training jerseys, but dropped the sleeves of the match kits with the renewal of the contract to save 10 million euros.
Barcelona received the most in the 2018/19 season – 81 million euros, when they received a bonus for the LaLiga title (1.5 million euros), plus a deal with Stanley. The club could have also received €5 million for winning the Champions League, but they failed to win the trophy during the Rakuten deal. Below is a table listing the earnings from sponsors in previous years, without taking into account stadium naming rights.
Eighth place in the elite
The Catalans earn a total of 67.5 million euros, which is eighth in the ranking of the Mundo Deportivo newspaper. The European giants have different types of contracts regarding advertising on the first team’s jerseys, training wear or stadium naming rights.
Manchester City (92-97 million euros), Manchester United (87 million euros), PSG (82 million euros), Liverpool (80 million euros), Juventus (77 million euros), Real Madrid (70 million euros) and Chelsea (67-72 million euros) earn more.
