Barcelona have made a surprise move and signed the former Juventus goalkeeper. Wojciech Szczesny returns from football retirement to replace the injured Marc-André ter Stegen, who suffered a serious knee injury. Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that he will sign a short-term contract for Barcelona.
- Szczęsny will return from retirement to replace the injured Ter Stegen at Barcelona
- According to Spanish sources, he will sign a one-season contract with an option to extend
- Medical tests will take place in the next few days in Spain
Wojciech Szczęsny retired after the end of last season, now he has decided to consider Barcelona’s offer. The Catalan club are in a crisis situation after Marc-André ter Stegen suffered a knee injury during Sunday’s 5-1 win over Villarreal. He is expected to be out for several months.
“I have great respect for Barcelona’s history,” Szczęsny told Diario Sport. “They are one of the best clubs in the world and I understand the difficult situation they are in after Ter Stegen’s injury. I think it would be disrespectful not to consider this option.”
According to Fabrizio Romano, negotiations will take place between Barcelona and Szczesny’s representatives in the coming days to hammer out the final details of the contract. The contract is expected to run until the end of the season, with an option to extend.
Ter Stegen’s injury opens Szczęsny’s path to Barcelona
Barcelona decided to act quickly, as LaLiga allows the signing of players without commitment outside the transfer window in the event of a long-term injury.
Ter Stegen’s absence has thus opened the door for the Polish goalkeeper to become a replacement alongside young goalkeeper Iñaki Peña.
Peña took over the number one goalkeeping role after Ter Stegen suffered an injury. Peña will protect the goal in Wednesday’s match against Getafe, while Szczęsny will undergo medical tests and formally join the squad.
Szczęsny, who has spent most of his career at Arsenal and Juventus, will join Barcelona as an experienced reinforcement that should help the club cope with tough matches in LaLiga and the Champions League.
