The fight for the Spanish La Liga title seemed to be closed for a long time, but Barcelona, after six wins in a row, smelled a chance. However, they are still 12 points behind leaders Real Madrid with a game to play. How much do Los Blancos need to secure the title?
After El Clásico, another big test awaited Barcelona. Second-placed Sevilla, who had a fantastic autumn, were coming to the Camp Nou, but their performance dropped considerably in the spring. Still, they are one of the best that La Liga has to offer this year.
Barcelona managed the game, with Pedri scoring the one-goal winner in the 72nd minute. Moreover, the Catalans replaced the Andalusians in second place in the table, with Sevilla dropping to fourth behind Atlético Madrid.
Currently, Barcelona has 57 points, with Real Madrid first with 69. The Blaugranas fans still fancy their chances of fighting for the title.
They have a game to play, so the lead could shrink to 9 points. In addition, Los Blancos will travel to the stadiums of Sevilla and Atlético Madrid in the remainder of the season. Despite this, they are in a great position.
Real have played 30 rounds, so they have 8 games left. If we calculate that Barcelona wins its remaining 9 games, it will gain 27 points and would have 84 at the end of the season. The Merengues have a worse record and need to collect 85 points. They therefore need to get 16 points by the end of the league, which equates to 5 wins and 1 draw, they have 8 games to do so.
The clear points should come at home to Getafe, away to Osasuna, home to Espanyol, home to Levante and away to Cadiz. In the remaining tough duels with Sevilla, Atlético and Betis, Real could thus only need to get one point, provided they manage to get all the above mentioned games for 3 points.
And of course, it’s not written anywhere that Barcelona will win all their matches. By the end of the league, for example, it goes to Levante, where it is not doing well at all and has lost three times, drawn once and won only once out of the last five games. It will also travel to Real Sociedad, Real Betis, and at home to Champions League quarter-finalists Villarreal.
Either way, Barcelona has created at least a little pressure on Real Madrid, who, while they may still be relatively calm, must be looking over their shoulder a bit.
