Barcelona got off to a bad start when García conceded a penalty in the 3rd minute. The penalty kick was then converted uncompromisingly by the German left back Filip Kostic.
In the 36th minute, Colombia’s Rafael Borre struck from distance. Barcelona goalkeeper Ter Stegen had no chance against this shot.
In the second half, the Catalans again cashed in after Kostic’s shot, who had an extremely productive night, scoring two goals and an assist from the left-back position.
In the end, Barcelona even corrected the score when Sergio Busquets got on the scoresheet first after a fantastic volley. However, by then the first minute of stoppage time was already underway.
At the very end, the Portuguese referee Dias managed to award a penalty for a foul on Luuk de Jong. This was luckily converted by Memphis Depay, but after a while the referee ended the match at 2:3.
Frankfurt will play West Ham, who managed to win in France against Olympique Lyon, in the semi-finals of the Europa League. In the other semi-final match, Leipzig and Scottish Rangers will face each other.
The Europa League is not a big draw for Barcelona fans. This is evidenced by the very modest attendance by Barcelona’s standards. Photos are already circulating on the internet of fans of other leading European teams mocking Barcelona for this modest attendance.
Frankfurt fans, on the other hand, did not let the possibility of a trip to the Camp Nou pass them by. Estimates suggest that as many as 30,000 could have gone!
Now Barcelona will concentrate on the league, which is the only competition the Catalan club is currently participating in, having already crashed out in the Spanish Cup in the eighth round against Bilbao.
The second placed Barcelona is only twelve points behind the leader Real Madrid, but at least the position that guarantees participation in the Champions League next season should be defended by Barcelona.
