After Markéta Vondroušová’s triumph in the women’s singles on Saturday, Barbora Strýcová could add another success for Czech tennis at Wimbledon on Sunday. The latter, in her farewell to the grass Grand Slam, was aiming for the doubles title with her teammate Sie Su-wei. And in a fine final, they managed to win it.

After giving birth, Strycova decided to extend her career and say goodbye to her favourite tournament as an active player. In the end, however, it was not just a token participation, but a very successful journey through doubles competition.

At the age of 37, she joined forces once again with the equally aged Taiwanese tennis player Sie Su-wei, alongside whom she celebrated her Wimbledon doubles triumph four years ago. From the Asian player’s point of view, there was an interesting confrontation in the final this time.

For she had reigned supreme on the London grass the year before last with one of this year’s final opponents, namely Elise Mertens. It was Sie’s third All England Club title overall. The Belgian entered this edition alongside Australian Storm Hunter, formerly Sanders.

Strýcová lost her serve early in the encounter, which didn’t finally start until after 8:30 p.m. due to the long men’s singles final. But the serve was not held by Hunter on the other side moments later, and it was soon level.

Sie didn’t avoid losing her serve in the seventh game, but that didn’t matter too much because the same thing happened again to the Australian doubles player afterwards. The Queensland native didn’t fare as well as she expected in the end of the set.

Another break point by the Czech-Taiwanese pair was also converted sixth set point at 7:5. After more than an hour of play, the more experienced duo were closer to winning their dream trophy.

In the second set of the match, which offered a number of interesting exchanges, Strycova and Sie took a 4:1 lead. However, their rivals managed to react to the unfavourable developments and level the match at 4:4.

With Mertens serving, the Czech and the Taiwanese capitalized on the second match point and were able to celebrate after winning 7:5 and 6:4. Domestic tennis experienced a very successful weekend as its representatives won a total of four Wimbledon titles.

Barbora Strýcová, in cooperation with Sie Su-wei, did not only build on the singles triumph of Markéta Vondroušová. Alena Kovackova and Laura Samsonova also succeeded in the girls’ doubles, while Jakub Filip won the boys’ doubles alongside Italian Gabriele Vulpitta.

Among the men, Wesley Koolhof from the Netherlands and Neal Skupski from Great Britain became the champions. In Saturday’s final they defeated the Spanish-Argentine pair of Marcel Granollers, Horacio Zeballos twice 6:4.
