On Sunday evening, the Czech players will play each other in Group B of the Tournament of Champions. Barbora Krejcikova and Karolina Pliskova, who is a slight favourite, will face each other. Will she be able to confirm this role?
Barbora Krejcikova has had a great season. The 25-year-old native of Brno won not only the French Open but also tournaments in Strasbourg and Prague. Of course, this had to be reflected in the WTA rankings, where she is currently ranked third.
Recently, however, she has not been doing very well in singles. Since her victory over Amanda Anisimova in the 16th Indian Wells final, a series of losses began. She has lost to Badosa, Kerber, Bencic, Kontaveit and Muguruza.
Her opponent on Sunday will be four years older compatriot Karolina Pliskova. She hasn’t managed to win a tournament yet in 2021, but has been putting in a fairly steady performance. It is worth mentioning that she was in the final of Wimbledon.
The former world number one is currently in a better starting position than her opponent. Pliskova managed to beat Spain’s Muguruza at the beginning of the Champions Tournament. The match had to be decided by a third set tiebreak.
“I want to play my game against Bara, aggressively. Either I can go through or it will be my last match of the season. I will try to put aside the nerves that we are from the same country and play a good match,” said Pliskova before the third clash.
So what’s your bet? The paper favourite for Sunday’s contest is Karolina Pliskova, who has not lost a set in her previous two duels with Krejcikova. Although the world No. 3 has made huge progress since then, she has been looking a bit tired lately, which is why she shouldn’t challenge Pliskova this time either.
