The Italian football stormtrooper has been fading into obscurity in recent years. But every now and then something happens to make the European football scene remember him. Sometimes it’s a showcase of his ever-great footballing skills, other times it’s various troublesome things.
Most recently, Mario Balotelli made the world media in particular with his stunning strike that earned him a nomination for the Puskás Award for the most beautiful goal of 2022. Now, the former world football talent is being written about again in a different context.
In the summer, the Italian traded Turkish side Adana Demirspor to Swiss side Sion and at first it seemed like a great move. Fans were excited, the Swiss league was expecting a huge boost in visibility from the transfer.
It just didn’t happen. Zion are not doing well and Balotelli is not exactly spreading joy either. Although he and his teammate Filip Stojilkovic are Sion’s top scorers with 5 league goals to their credit, he has nevertheless scored three times from penalties.
To make matters worse, he has 6 yellow cards in 12 games. In the last two games he has worn the captain’s armband on his left arm. But the disappointment of the Sion fans is all the greater.
Balotelli is not trying to do anything about his team’s poor form. In the stands, the fans insulted him, scolding him for not sacrificing himself at all for the team. And in the last match, they set fire to his jersey in the stands.
Sion is in second to last place in the Swiss Super League. They have the same number of points as last-placed Winterthur, and last place means relegation.
In the next round, Sion will face a tough match against Lugano, where among others Czech midfielder Roman Macek is based.
