It’s been a long wait, but it’s finally over. Not only the fans, but everyone involved is already looking forward to the first race of the season, the Bahrain Grand Prix. So what is the schedule and where can you follow the race weekend?
Formula 1 has 23 Grands Prix scheduled for 2023, the first of which is the Bahrain Grand Prix, the full official name of the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix.
The first race was held at the Sakhir circuit back in 2004. The race was then dominated by both Ferrari cars, with Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello capturing the double.
The Bahrain Grand Prix has opened the F1 season a total of four times, in 2006, 2010, 2021 and 2022. Last year, the queen of motorsport entered a whole new era in terms of technological regulations. This year, it is not only the opening round of the 2023 season that will be marked by evolution.
This year, the race will once again be a classic fifty-seven-lap event, during which the drivers will cover a total of 308 kilometres. The fastest lap is still held by Pedro de la Rosa from 2005, who set a time of 1:31.447.
Bahrain International Circuit
The circuit itself is 5.412 kilometres long and consists of fifteen corners. It also offers 3 DRS zones for easier overtaking. The first detection point is located before the first corner, the second on the approach to turn 9 and the third at the penultimate corner, as you can see in the picture below.
But in addition to the detection points, you can also see the average speeds that the pilots achieve in each corner, as well as which gear they usually shift into in that corner.
Bahrain Grand Prix – programme
The race programme at the Sakhir circuit will kick off on Friday, March 3 at 12:30pm, when drivers and teams will take part in the first free practice session (officially called Free Practice 1 – ed.). On the same day, at 16:00, the second practice will start.
Both will last the standard one hour. The same applies to FP3, which is scheduled for Saturday, March 4, again from 12:30 to 13:30. Qualifying then follows classically on Saturday afternoon (16::00) to determine the order for Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix.
All five lights on the Bahrain International Circuit will go out on Sunday, March 5, at exactly 16:00.
Bahrain Grand Prix – stream
Live coverage of the F1 race can be watched on Sport 1 and Sport 2, where you can switch between Czech and Slovak audio tracks. There is also F1 TV, where you can switch between the onboard cameras of the individual drivers.
But F1 TV also offers other features, such as livetiming and detailed telemetry. In addition to the full F1 programme, you can also watch press conferences or practice sessions and F2 or F3 qualifying.
Bahrain Grand Prix – odds, predictions
Last year, both Ferrari cars won the double here, with Charles Leclerc finishing first and his teammate Carlos Sainz second. Red Bull, on the other hand, was very unlucky, as both of its drivers failed to finish the race.
This year, however, the situation is completely different. Based on the results and predictions from pre-season testing, Red Bull should have the strongest race pace, with a one-tenth of a second advantage over Ferrari. The Mercedes cars should then be less than three tenths of a second behind. Aston Martin looks much better in terms of performance and should be right behind the top three teams.
On the other hand, AlphaTauri, Haas and Williams are predicted to have the worst results. There are more betting options, and you can also bet on whether your favourite will beat its rival in the overall standings.
