A relegation match, as it should be. In front of their home fans, Benfica Lisbon secured promotion to the Champions League Spring Stage, beating Juventus 4-3. Alexander Bah started in the starting line-up, Petar Musa came off the bench.
Benfica started offensively but lacked composure in the final stages. In the 18th minute, they celebrated from the first shot on target. A centre heading for goal was crossed by stopper Antonio Silva, Wojciech Szczesny had no chance to react.
The visitors responded just four minutes later. After a corner kick, Dusan Vlahovic headed only into the goalkeeper, the finish was already into the net by Moise Kean, which was only revealed by VAR. The pace of the match was building up, in the 27th minute Juan Cuadrado played a hand in the penalty area and a penalty was whistled.
Experienced midfielder Joao Mário took the ball and cleared the left post. And Mário was there for the next goal. He found Rafa Silva with a centre, and with a neat flick he made it 3-1. The home team went into the cabins with a two-goal lead.
The Old Lady was still under the blanket after the change of sides, the players were angry and arguing among themselves. On the other side, little Silva continued his show, avoiding an offside in the 50th minute and scoring with his left foot for the second time in the match.
Ten minutes later, Goncalo Ramos scored twice. First his shot could be saved by Szczesny, then his header was inaccurate. In the 76th minute Silva could have had a hat-trick, but he punishingly fired into the empty net.
And he was sorry. Arkadiusz Milik reduced the deficit with a shot to the right post and signalled a comeback. And two minutes later, Weston McKennie scored from the spot and Juventus were back in the points race.
The Old Lady staked everything on attack, so in the 86th minute Silva raced in alone on the goalkeeper. However, he only hit the right post. Benfica had already finished the job and after winning 4: 3 they are now in the eighth round of the competition.
