The club coaches don’t like the national break very much, but Xavi will probably welcome it with open arms this time. Both from a footballing and health point of view.
Barcelona have won only one of their last three league games, have five points out of a possible nine and are three points behind Real Madrid in third place. Second-placed Girona has one point more.
And Xavi has to account for the absences. Robert Lewandowski was injured in the week of the Champions League, and Frenkie de Jong has had similar ankle problems in the past. Midfielder Pedri has also been missing since the second leg.
This trio has now been completed by key stopper Jules Koundé. The French defender has been in great form this season and his loss will be felt.
Koundé had to leave the pitch at the Estadio Nuevo Los Cármenes in the first half when he complained of knee pain after a clash with teammate Gavi.
Barcelona’s fears were confirmed as an examination showed strained lateral ligaments in his left knee, which will rule him out of the game for five weeks, according to Spanish Sport.
Koundé will thus miss the El Clásico, which will be played at the end of October. He will also miss matches against Athletic Club, Real Sociedad and the Champions League double-header with Shakhtar. The duel with Alaves is with a question mark.
