Slavia Prague were long in the running for three points against a strong Feyenoord side in the penultimate round of the Conference Europa League group stage. The Dutch team managed to tie the game at 2:2.
The Seychellois went into the match in good form. They have won their last five competitive matches and were confident in the match against Feyenoord. They knew that if they won, they would be very close to qualifying for the spring European Conference League.
Everything started well. Even though the visitors were playing at the beginning of the game, Slavia Prague scored the first goal. The Dutch took a risk with their cross, Bah intercepted the ball from the visitors’ goalkeeper and passed to Peter Olayinka, who hit the uncovered net. The home team led 1: 0.
However, after half an hour of play, the visitors were delighted with a goal to make it 1-1. Cyriel Dessers broke free in the whitewash and beat Mandouse, who got a hand to the ball but didn’t stop it going into the net.
Things started to look better for Slavia from the 36th minute when Guus Til fouled Stancio stupidly and dangerously. The referee first pulled out a yellow card, but soon changed it to a red one. The Dutch finished the game with ten men.
The powerplay, which should have lasted over an hour, was used by Slavia in the 66th minute. Holeš shot and the visiting goalkeeper knocked the shot just in front of him to where Jan Kuchta was standing. He handled the rebounded ball and put his team back in the lead.
The Seychellois held the lead for a long time 2:1 against ten Feyenoord players. However, they rushed for the equaliser, which finally came. Dessers scored his second goal of the game, this time with a header. He equalised at 2:2.
The result was final. Slavia were confident, twice in the match they were leading, but in the end they could only enjoy a point against a strong opponent. Both teams fought hard, the match was even. The red card didn’t weaken the visitors too much, the Slavs were greatly helped by mistakes of the opponent’s goalkeeper.
Feyenoord are clear to advance from first place. Slavia Prague remains in second place, but with only a one-point lead over Union Berlin, whom they will face in their last match. The important match will be played on 9 December in Germany.
