A big return to black – Mercedes revealed the colouring of its cars for the 2023 Formula One season on the morning of Wednesday 15 February.
The German stable also opted for this coloring to reduce the weight of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell’s monoposts, which will cause greater efficiency on the race track itself.
It should be noted, black was the colour Mercedes used in the 2020 and 2021 seasons as part of its fight against racism. Last year, however, the team reverted to silver, with which it failed to dominate the Constructors’ Cup for the first time in a long time, finishing only third behind Red Bull and Ferrari.
Mercedes in the title fight again?
As the stable boss has already stated in a press release, Mercedes wants to return to the top of F1. In fact, it will not go into the new season as the Constructors’ Cup winner for the first time since 2014.
“Our expectations are always that we will be able to fight for the title. But our competitors were very strong last year and we are catching up. This year we are going all out to get back to the front,” said team boss Toto Wolff in an official press release.
“Last year we were overweight. This year, we’re trying to figure out where we can squeeze out every gram. So now history is repeating itself. You’ll see that there are some pieces of raw carbon on the car and some are painted matte black,” Wolff said of the coloring of this year’s cars.
Same driver line-up, Mercedes is true to its concept
The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team will go into the 2023 season with the same driver line-up as last year. The role of team leader should continue to be filled by Hamilton, who however finished behind Russell in the final drivers’ championship standings in the previous season.
Moreover, as you can also note above, Mercedes has stayed true to its concept with almost zero sidepods.
“In this generation of cars, the performance of the car depends a lot on the details. If you look at the W14, you see the DNA of the W13, but also a lot of evolution and upgrades,” added Mercedes technical director Mike Elliott to Wolff.
