In Indian Wells, Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka and Kazakhstan’s Yelena Rybakina faced each other. Rybakina eventually enjoyed a 2: 0 victory, however, the incident from the second set is discussed after the match.
At 2::2 and 40::30 in the second set, Azarenka was on serve, only to make a double fault and send the game into a tie. She then burst into tears, which she was unable to stop, and the match had to be stopped.
In addition, immediately after the end of the match, Azarenka deleted all her social networks, except Facebook, which she has not used for some time, and archived her website. With this move, the Belarusian wanted to lose herself from the public space.
It is not yet clear what exactly was behind Azarenka’s mid-match collapse. However, it is believed to be because of the situation in Ukraine, which she said made her feel overwhelmed. Moreover, because of the conflict, the tennis player could not compete under the Belarusian flag.
“I am devastated by the actions that have been taking place against Ukraine on its territory in recent days. It is heartbreaking to see how many innocent people have been affected and are still affected by such violence,” Azarenka said before the tournament, according to Tennis World.
Her opponent Rybakina, however, was not very sympathetic. “Is this normal? Nobody understood what was happening. If she had called a doctor or a physiotherapist, that would have been one thing.
But we had to stop playing for a few minutes and then resume. I feel like the rules don’t allow that. She should have been given a warning or something,” Rybakina said about the incident.
