Ukraine was considered to be the bigger favourite, as they performed very well in the tournament. But against Austria they did not catch the start and were already down 1: 0 in the 21st minute.
Austria’s star player David Alaba played a corner kick, which fell in the whitewash and reached Baumgartner, who headed it into the net.
Eight minutes later, the equaliser could have come. Mykola Shaparenko got into the opponents’ penalty area and finished to the right post, but his attempt was caught by Daniel Bachman.
In the 37th minute, the Austrians came again, Konrad Laimer, playing actively, found the ball in the penalty area and sent a very sharp attempt towards the bar, but Bushchan made a great save.
Arnautovic could have increased the lead in the 42nd minute. He worked a nice pass into the box and tried to finish quickly, but missed the target.
Not much happened in the second half, Austria played very skilfully and kept the result. Ukraine, on the other hand, could not find a recipe for their opponents.
In the end, the Austrians deserved to advance from the second place, Ukraine, on the other hand, with three points and a negative score of 4::5 is very close to elimination.
This result also helped the Czech national team, which will almost certainly qualify for the eighth round if it finishes in third place.
