Australia’s qualification to the World Cup was saved by a dancing goalkeeper in the penalty shootout. Check out his unusual style
We have seen a few times that a team has a penalty specialist who is sent to the game just for the penalty shootout. Australia has one of those, his name is Andrew Redmayne and he just saved his country’s qualification to the World Cup in Qatar.
We have seen a few times that a team has a penalty specialist who is sent to the game just for the penalty shootout. Australia has one of those, his name is Andrew Redmayne and he just saved his country’s qualification to the World Cup in Qatar.
The barrage match between Australia and Peru played on a neutral ground in Qatar didn’t offer much entertainment. Both teams played very cautiously, with only three shots on target in the entire match.
After ninety minutes the match went into extra time, but even there we didn’t see any big chances. The most interesting moment came in the 120th minute.
Australia made a last-minute substitution, with goalkeeper and captain Mathew Ryan leaving the field and being replaced by Andrew Redmayne.
This move was made for the sake of penalties, as Redmayne is considered a specialist. He throws attackers around the goal with his dancing and this is how he got into the heads of two Peru goal scorers.
The Australians didn’t give the first penalty, the Peruvian shooters converted twice and led 2-1. But in the third series, Advincula got accustomed to Redmayne’s dances and pushed the penalty so hard towards the bar that he scored it.
After that, both teams’ shooters converted, until in the sixth series, at 5: 4, Valera went for the decisive penalty. If he doesn’t convert, Peru goes home.
Running from one pole to the other, arms flailing, legs flailing, squatting, jumping sideways and Redmayne catches! Australia are through to the World Cup in Qatar thanks to a dancing goalkeeper.
The line dancing didn’t occur to Redmayne at the time, he does it regularly. In the 2019 penalty shootout, the 33-year-old goalkeeper saved Sidney FC’s title with two caught penalties, performing his favourite dance for both.
