The final round of qualifying for the main stage of the Australian Open went well for the three remaining Czechs. Dalibor Svrčina, Sara Bejlek and Brenda Fruhvirtová managed to win their matches and can look forward to their first participation at the Australian Grand Slam.
The final round of qualifying for the main stage of the Australian Open went well for the three remaining Czechs. Dalibor Svrčina, Sara Bejlek and Brenda Fruhvirtová managed to win their matches and can look forward to their first participation at the Australian Grand Slam.
As many as 14 Czech players will compete at this year’s Australian Open. Dalibor Svrčina, Sara Bejlek and Brenda Fruhvirtová have been added to the list of successful qualifiers. For all three of them it is a great success and the first participation in the main stage of a Grand Slam in their career.
Svrcina surprised the favourite
Dalibor Svrcina (219th) didn’t have to play this round at all. In his last match, he was just a little bit away from elimination. However, the 20-year-old talent managed to play at a great pace and managed to advance through all the obstacles to the last qualifying round.
He entered it as a clear underdog against Swiss Leandro Riedi (135th), who has had a great month so far, winning 18 of his last 19 matches.
But Svrcina was not deterred by this statistic and in the first set the Swiss could only look hopelessly for his coach in the stands. The native of Ostrava played fantastically, didn’t let his opponent do anything and gave him a 6-0 canary in the first set .
The second set was a bit more even in terms of the number of games. However, Svrcina held his own serve very confidently and did not give the aggressively playing Riedi any chances for a break point. In the third game Svrcina took advantage of his opponent’s hesitation and took his serve away.
Then all he had to do was to finish the match and great joy could break out. Just for the record, the Czech player entered the match as a big underdog (4.28). For the first time, the 20-year-old Svrcina can look forward to playing in the main draw of a major grand slam.
Fifteen-year-old Brenda Fruhvirtova turned the match around
Brenda Fruhvirt (135th) had to fight her way through to the second round of qualifying in a tight match with Ukraine’s Snigur. It was no different in the last qualifying round.
Spain’s Bouzas Maneiro (183rd) is a versatile player who can handle clay and hard surfaces. In the first set, she showed her qualities when she took her serve from Fruhvirt three times and she lost the first set after a struggle – 3-6.
But still only 15 years old, Fruhvirt showed her great talent and in the second set she handled the important moments in the shortened game and managed to take the match to the third set – 7-6(2).
The winner of eight ITF clay titles last year started the last set with a well converted break point. But her opponent always managed to level the score. A very tough battle for every ball was decided in the ninth game.
There, Fruhvirtova broke the Spaniard’s serve with a clean game and defended her serve in a tough tenth game – 6-4.
This will be her first career appearance at a women’s Grand Slam, where her older sister Linda will also be competing.
A great result for Sara Bejlek as well
Sixteen-year-old Sara Bejlek (175th) is also enjoying a great start to the new season. Against Russia’s Erika Andreeva (137th) she entered the match as an outsider, just like Svrcina. But she managed to beat the Russian in an hour and a half and will join the Czech players in the main stage of the tournament.
Throughout the match, Bejlek relied mainly on very accurate and hard shots, which the Russian had a hard time responding to. Bejlek did not lose her serve even once during the whole match. In the first set she broke her opponent’s serve twice and in the second set she just needed a converted break point in the sixth game.
The promising Czech player managed to break through to the main stage of the Grand Slam last year, when she advanced to the first round of the US Open. Now she has also managed to advance to the Australian Grand Slam.
