Thibaut Courtois is currently a goalkeeper for Real Madrid, where he became the world’s best goalkeeper, but he also has a history with city rivals Atlético. The latter is now calling on the Belgian goalkeeper to apologise for his behaviour.
Courtois was bought by Chelsea as a promising goalkeeper back in 2011 from Genk, only for Petr Cech to reign firmly in the A-team goal. The Belgian youngster was sent on loan to Atlético Madrid, where he spent three seasons.
He became one of the symbols of the birth of the new Atlético under Diego Simeone, being the last resort behind a solid defensive line. With the Colchoneros he won La Liga and reached the Champions League final, and for his performances the management set up a plaque for him outside the stadium, given to the club’s most successful players.
In 2014, Courtois returned to Chelsea, where he spent 4 seasons, and returned to Madrid, but this time to his biggest rival, Real. Atlético fans bit very hard and actually still can’t get over it to this day.
Moreover, Courtois didn’t always hold back in his statements, the Indios faithful couldn’t watch it and destroyed the plaque. The club has repaired it, but the situation continues.
When Real took on Atlético last year, the home fans behind the goal were shouting and insulting Courtois. But the Belgian goalkeeper took it all with a smile, pointing his finger at his arm where he has the Champions League trophy tattooed. Atleti never won the trophy.
The club’s management thus disliked Courtois’ behaviour and officially sent him a letter asking him to apologise for his behaviour towards the club, otherwise his plaque will be removed.
According to journalist José Luis Sánchez of La Sexta, who usually has good info about what is going on at Real, Courtois will not apologize. But with all his trophies, he may not be twice sorry about the removal of his plaque outside the Atlético stadium.
