At thirty years of age, he broke the four hundred match mark, now Dutchman Davy Pröpper has retired
The name Davy Pröpper is exclusively associated with PSV and Vitesse Arnhem in the Netherlands. The central midfielder has played over 100 games for both teams. With Eindhoven, he won the domestic cup three times and once lifted the league championship trophy. What has now led him to the end of his career?
The Arnhem native, who at the age of 30 still had a lot to offer in terms of football, decided to hang up his cleats rather unexpectedly.
“Before Christmas I decided to end my playing career. I felt a great relief after my decision, so now I know it was the right decision,” he told the club’s website.
Davy’s time abroad also had a big influence on the end. Between 2017 and 2021 he wore the jersey of Brighton of England, for whom he managed to play 121 games with a record of two goals and nine assists.
“When I was abroad, I gradually lost my love for football. It was difficult for me to maintain the discipline needed to perform at my best.”
He also subsequently admitted that a major problem was the coronavirus crisis, which prevented him from having proper contact with his relatives. For this reason he returned to Eindhoven last summer.
“I am grateful that the club made me feel welcome. I had hoped to rediscover the joy of playing football, but it didn’t happen because I don’t feel comfortable in the world of football. Idon’t want to be part of it anymore,” he said after his exit.
Besides PSV, he also wore the jersey of the aforementioned Arnhem. In the colours of Vittese he reached a solid 162 games in which he scored twenty-one times and assisted eighteen goals.
