The tennis tournament in Ostrava, which belongs to the category of challengers, started on Monday. Although the Czech Republic had a relatively large representation here, the quarterfinals will have to do without domestic players.
Lukáš Rosol, Zdeněk Kolář, Patrik Rikl, Martin Krumich and Jiří Lehečka made it to the main stage of the tournament. However, none of them were seeded players, so they did not play the role of favourites. This was also reflected in the results.
Zdeněk Kolář failed in the first round. The 24-year-old tennis player met the Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry, to whom he lost 1: 2 sets. The talented tennis player subsequently knocked out the number one seeded player and continues to be in the tournament bracket.
Patrik Rikl also suffered a similar fate, as he did not have to take part in the qualifying matches thanks to a wild card. However, he was not able to beat Sergiy Stakhovsky in the first round. The Ukrainian veteran won without much difficulty 6::4 and 6::2.
Martin Krumich did not make it past the first round either. The 18-year-old tennis player finished on the racket of Sebastian Baez. The home tennis player won only four games.
Jiri Lehecka did a little better. One of the greatest Czech talents defeated Lestienne, whom he even gave a canary. In the eighth round, however, the Frenchman Bonzi, the tournament’s number three, was already beyond his strength.
Perhaps the biggest hopes were pinned on Lukáš Rosol. The two-time Davis Cup winner advanced over Safwat, but then lost the derby to Slovak Klein 1: 2 sets.
This year’s edition of the Ostrava Challenger was not very successful for the home tennis players. Let’s hope it will be better in the next years.
