Thursday, April 7, 2022. Golf fans around the world have this date in bold on their calendars. It marks the start of the Golf Masters, which is historically regarded as the biggest and most prestigious event in the world. The best players in the world descend on the Augusta National Golf Club, and every fan is eager to visit. But what does a visit to the Masters entail?
There are practically two ways to get to this extremely prestigious event. You need luck or a lot of money. Ideally, both. The price from the official ticket distributor is not exorbitant.
For the practice round, fans could get a full-day ticket for $75, which translates to just under 1,700 CZK. For one of the game days alone (Thursday – Sunday) the price went up to $115, approximately 2600 CZK.
For the less golf-savvy, it should be noted that these are all-day tickets, so, for example, some skiing in a prestigious mountain resort won’t cost you much cheaper.
Practice round – $75 (1690 CZK)
Day passes – $115 (2590 CZK)
Trouble is, the demand for Masters tickets is literally gigantic. Whether it’s a practice round or a live tournament, the chances of getting tickets are roughly 0.55 percent. That means one person out of 200 will make it to Augusta.
While any applicant can try their luck at getting a ticket for multiple days, the rules are very strict. If you do manage to get in on a practice day, for example, you don’t have to look for an overnight stay to visit on another day – you don’t qualify.
Registering alone will only get you into the pre-qualifying draw. First you have a questionnaire to fill in, then you wait to see if you are one of the 22,000 or so lucky people who can buy a ticket.
If you don’t, and you get the likely email reply, “We have completed the Masters ticket selection process and regret to inform you that your entry was not selected,” you do have one more, albeit considerably more expensive, option. Many of the tickets then go onto the so-called secondary market, where the harvest comes in for the resellers.
According to some of the people trying to get into the Masters this way, the price of tickets is rising to astronomical amounts: “My wife received an email regarding the price of tickets for the 2023 Masters. It’s apparent that the 2022 ticket packages, which start at $7,500 (almost 169k) per person, are sold out,” wrote one person on the forum.
According to others, the prices can go as high as $10,000, which translates to some 225,000 crowns. Even so, every year Augusta is filled to bursting. The interest in attending golf’s most famous tournament is simply enormous.
