An incredible story is written by goalkeeper Remko Pasveer. The Dutch goalkeeper was Ajax’s number one last season and now he has made his first start for the national team, all at the age of 38.

Remko Pasveer has played the role of number two at big clubs virtually all his life. It all started in 2006, when he won the Under-21 European Championship with the Dutch junior team. It’s probably not surprising that he was the reserve goalkeeper then…

He spent his club career in his native Netherlands. He played for clubs such as Go Ahead Eagles, Vitesse and Heracles Almelo. However, big engagements eluded him, unless we take into account his time at PSV, where he was responsible for the role of number two and only sporadically jumped into matches.

Everything changed in the 2021/22 season when he got his chance at Ajax. His colleague Onan was suspended by UEFA for a positive doping test. And Pasveer made the most of his chance. “Sometimes you have to be lucky for everything to fall into place, and that’s what happened at Ajax, ” Pasveer said.

He didn’t disappoint with his performance, quite the opposite. He consolidated his position at the club and even got an invitation to the national team. “When I was a kid I dreamed of being nominated for the Oranje. That has now happened, but the dream will become complete when I actually play in a match,” said the Dutch veteran.

For Pasveer, his dream has indeed come true and he jumped into the UEFA Nations League duel against Poland on 22 September. He thus became the second oldest footballer ever to play for the Netherlands. In addition, he scored a clean sheet in his debut start. His team won 2:0.

And what does he say about a possible nomination for the 2023 World Cup? “Of course. If you are in the nomination now, you want to be in it for the next World Cup.
