The eighth round of the Europa Conference League pitted Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma, who are one of the favourites to win the competition overall, against Dutch side Vitesse. The Romans won their first match, played away, by a close 1-0.
The eighth round of the Europa Conference League pitted Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma, who are one of the favourites to win the competition overall, against Dutch side Vitesse. The Romans won their first away match by a narrow 1-0. They go into the rematch as favourites, but nothing is a foregone conclusion.
AS Rome qualified for the knockout stages of the Europa League from first place with 13 points. Vitesse moved up from second place with 10 points, with Rennes finishing first with 4 more points.
At home, AS Rome is in very good form. Out of the last 11 matches at home, the Romans have managed to win six times, draw four times and taste defeat once. As far as European games at home are concerned, they are even better. In the last 26 matches they have lost only once.
On the other hand, Vitesse, who arrive in Rome as an underdog, are not experiencing a hilarious form. They have failed to score a single goal in their last three matches. They are only in sixth place in the league and are gradually falling down the table.
A look at the statistics clearly plays for the home team. In the last 13 matches, when AS Rome reached the knockout round and won the first match, they always managed to advance to the next round. After a 1-0 win, they are not certain to qualify, but they have a good chance.
Should the Romans advance past Vitesse, it would be their second consecutive quarter-final in European competition.
Vitesse have failed to advance in the last five times they have lost their first game in the knockout stages. Another bad news for the visitors could be the fact that the Romans have not lost in their last three home games, unless they conceded a goal first.
Vitesse come to Rome as a big underdog. They lost their first game at home and it doesn’t look like they are going to surprise Jose Mourinho’s charges. The experienced favourite will guard its progress at home and can look out for its quarter-final opponent.
