The two teams were due to play a match as part of the Joan Gamper Trophy, which was due to be played on 6 August at the Camp Nou. Both the men’s and women’s teams were to meet. Barcelona is now working on finding a new opponent for this match.
Barcelona want to make it clear that the cancellation of the matches was due to circumstances outside their club and arose from the express wish of AS Roma.
“The club’s legal department is studying possible action against the Italian club for damages caused to Barcelona and its fans because of this unexpected and unjustified decision,” read an official statement from the blaugranas.
According to the Italian club, the decision stems from the need to change the summer training schedule to create the best possible working conditions for its teams with a view to the coming season.
“The men’s and women’s teams will continue their preparation, which will be less affected by travel. We thank Barcelona for the invitation and the club wishes them a successful continuation of their summer preparation,” responded the team from the Italian capital.
