As long as Nadal and Djokovic are playing, there is no new era, says Alcaraz modestly
Carlos Alcaraz is a tennis sensation who is poised to become one of the best tennis players in history. This is evidenced by the words of Novak Djokovic, who said that he has never played against someone like him. But the Spanish youngster is keeping his feet on the ground.
Carlos Alcaraz is a tennis sensation who is poised to become one of the best tennis players in history. This is evidenced by the words of Novak Djokovic, who said that he has never played against someone like him. But the Spanish youngster is keeping his feet on the ground.
Two years ago, he was already predicting a great future. But no one, not even Carlos Alcaraz himself, expected him to climb to the top so quickly.
It all started with his victory at the US Open last year, where Alcaraz won his first Grand Slam and rose to the top of the ATP rankings. At the French Open a few months ago, he crushed his opponents and reached the semifinals, where even against Djokovic, many people believed in him.
However, he couldn’t play 100% due to injury and lost 1: 3. However, this made the Spanish tennis player even stronger and he went to Wimbledon with maximum vigour. Yet until then he was considered a threat on clay and concrete, grass was not his best friend.
But Alcaraz showed tremendous improvement on the grass surface, reaching the final where he defeated Novak Djokovic in a five-set battle to win his second Grand Slam title. And he’s still only 20 years old.
“I always dreamed of winning Wimbledon, but I didn’t think I could do it at such a young age,” Alcaraz told MARCA.
Djokovic was even more pleased to hear that he had never played anyone like him and that Alcaraz had the best of the “Big Three” players.
“That’s crazy, unbelievable coming from a guy who has played against tennis legends and played epic matches against Nadal and Federer. Words like that give me even more motivation to keep working hard and get better, ” Alcaraz said.
Many are describing his triumph as the beginning of a new era and a slow retreat from the glory of the big three. But Alcaraz disagrees.
“I don’t think so. As long as Rafa and Novak are playing, there won’t be a new era. In a couple of years, when they stop playing, the debate may reopen. But now is not the time,” Alcaraz says modestly.
