Arsenal managed another important match against a strong opponent, this time beating Tottenham 2-0 in the London derby. Thanks to Saturday’s defeat to Manchester City, Mikel Arteta’s charges have increased their lead to 8 points. How did the Spanish coach comment on the victory?
“I am very happy for two reasons. Firstly, because I had the opportunity to see a team with a lot of courage, determination and quality that really wanted to win the game, and also because we have a job that we can make a lot of people happy.
When you have this opportunity, you have to try to do it. The joy afterwards with the fans was a great feeling and all the suffering and hours of work then make a lot of sense when you have moments like that,” the Gunners club website published a post-match interview with Arteta.
The midfield line of Xhaka – Partey – Ødegaard was the main contributor to the win, with the latter in particular being the difference man on the pitch as he scored another goal, his eighth overall, to become the team’s top league scorer.
The 24-year-old Norwegian midfielder’s role is all the more important now that the team is missing Gabriel Jesus, who has 5 league goals so far. “He was amazing. Especially in the first half I think he was unbelievable. He showed his exceptionalism again,” Arteta commented on his captain’s performance.
But we mustn’t forget goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who covered all 7 shots of Tottenham players. “Aaron had some great saves and I’m glad for that because that’s exactly what you need to win here.”
Arsenal are riding a great wave, but this weekend the Premier League leaders will face another big challenge in the form of Manchester United.
If we take into account only the last 5 league rounds, the team of coach Erik ten Hag is clearly the best team in England, which also handled Manchester City on Saturday, which helped Arsenal a lot in increasing the lead.
The Gunners have 9 more points on the second Manchester team, but still not even half of the league matches are played, so a win for the Red Devils could help in making this season more dramatic.
