Slavia was awarded the first round of the European Conference League play-offs against Fenerbahce Istanbul. What do Lukáš Masopust, Tomáš Holeš and Daniel Samek think about the clash with the current fifth team in the Super Lig?
Despite the fact that the Slavic fans did not wish the eastern destination, the players and the implementation team accepted Fenerbahçe with joy. The Sešiovans have never played in Turkey under Jindřich Trpišovský, and they are also attracted by the local fan culture.
Lukáš Masopust is one of the team’s most experienced players, having experienced the Champions League in the red and white jersey, as well as two trips to Israel and Hungary. This time he also wanted an opponent with a good fan base, more precisely a trip to the Netherlands, Austria or Turkey.
“It was one of my three teams that I picked because of the facilities they have and the fans. I wanted PSV, Rapid Vienna or Fenerbahçe, so it worked out,” said the national all-rounder.
While Fenerbahçe boasts a great atmosphere at home games, they have not won a single home game in the Europa League group stage. It took three points only from Antwerp, besides drawing twice with Frankfurt and taking a point in its own stadium against Antwerp.
Tomáš Holeš is looking forward to the support of the fans in both matches. Especially the most famous name in the Fenerbahçe squad, Mesut Özil. It will not be the first confrontation with an Arsenal player for the skilful midfielder or defender, he even scored a goal at the Emirates Stadium in the spring.
“Fenerbahçe was my wish, I watched TV and kept my fingers crossed. We don’t play until the end of February so I hope we’ll be playing at least partly with the crowd. Özil is a great footballer, one of the legends, he went through world clubs. I am looking forward to seeing him very much,” says Holeš.
Slavia will play their first away game, which is an advantage after the abolition of the away goal rule. However, the coronavirus situation must improve in both countries, with an average of 14,000 infected people currently in the Czech Republic and as many as 18,000 in Turkey.
Daniel Samek’s good performance against Union Berlin helped the team to advance from the Conference League group. The seventeen year old talent managed the duels in the middle of the pitch and now he can deservedly look forward to Fenerbahçe.
“I am delighted with the draw. The coaches and the boys wanted Fenerbahçe. They always want to see where we haven’t played before. If it’s going to be played with spectators, it’s better for us to start away. We probably don’t care, but if it was the other way around, it would be more difficult,” Samek thinks.
