The last edition of the classic Champions League format and Arsenal first-ever trophy? The Gunners have swept through the group and are eyeing the play-offs, with summer signing Kai Havertz coming into form. There are some interesting numbers attached to the German all-rounder that increase the likelihood of Champions League success.
The instatroll_football Instagram page has come up with an interesting summary of the numbers. It has put the numbers from the current season in context with the 2020/21 edition, when the Champions League was rather unexpectedly won by London Chelsea.
In the same season, Arsenal won the Community Shield (as FA Cup winners), Tottenham were in first place after ten rounds of the Premier League and it was by Kai Havertz first season at Chelsea. All three facts are, or were, true this season.
All of the following statistics revolve around summer signing of Havertz. His Chelsea fell out with the London club in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup in the 2020/21 season, and the same happened to the Gunners this year when they went down 1: 3 at West Ham.
The journey to the most valuable trophy was preceded by a relatively easy group journey, the Blues were assured of qualification in the fifth round of the regular season. This time Arsenal managed to do the same, specifically by winning at home against Sevilla.
And both teams finished the group in the same way. With certain progression, Chelsea drew 1-1 three years ago and Arsenal now 1-1. The point from Eindhoven in the Netherlands was scored by striker Eddie Nketiah with his first goal in the Champions League.
Finally, both teams have yet to face, in Arsenal case, Porto in the play-offs. Chelsea eliminated the Portuguese in the quarter-finals after a 2-0 win and a 0-1 defeat, and were in control of the double-header until the set-up of the rematch, when they scored.
Whether this is a mere statistical coincidence, football fans will find out in the spring. Either way, the Gunners are among the favourites along with last year’s winner Manchester City, Bayern with Harry Kane at the helm and the always strong Real Madrid.
