Brentford won their first game after promotion to the English elite, beating Arsenal 2-0 at home. The goals were scored by Sergi Canos and Christian Norgaard, the former hit the bottom left corner of the net, the latter scored with a header.
The first shot of the season was taken by Kieran Tierney, but only hit the centre of the goal. On the other side, Bryan Mbeumo took a dangerous header, but just missed. The French speedster came even closer to scoring in the 12th minute when he hit the bar.
In the 22nd minute, the hosts were already ahead. Sergi Canos hit a shot from the ground which gave Bernd Leno no chance. Eight minutes later, Mbeumo could have doubled the lead, but failed to convert a great chance. That was the last chance of the first half and the score was 1-0.
Emil Smith-Rowe opened the second half with a shot, but David Raya dealt with it. In the 65th minute, Gabriel Martinelli tried his hand, but his header missed the target. Granit Xhaka also missed the target with a volley.
It was the home side who took the first chance after the change of sides. Christian Norgaard was the best player in a messy situation and headed into the net. At least Nicolas Pepe could have reduced the deficit, but Raya made a great save.
