Arsenal failed to win a key Champions League clash, losing 0:2 at Newcastle and will most likely play only in the Europa League next season. They are two points behind fourth-placed Tottenham with a round to go.
Arsenal failed to win a key Champions League match, losing 0-2 at Newcastle and will most likely play only in the Europa League next season. They aretwo points behind fourth-placed Tottenham with a round to go.
Newcastle entered the match actively, in the eighth minute they almost got the opening goal from Aaron Ramsdale, but his mistake in the midfield was not used. After the Gunners recovered, Bukayo Saka tried twice, in the first case he tricked the defending player, the second time he was saved by Martin Dúbravka.
The home side were more active, but struggled in the end, and the attacking players didn’t guard the offside line at all. In the 36th minute, Allan Saint-Maximin shot after an individual action, but Ramsdale made a good save.
Newcastle’s pressure resulted in the opening goal in the 55th minute. Joelinton found Callum Wilson in the whitewash, who easily opened the scoring. And the English striker couldn’t do enough, narrowly missing from a volley eight minutes later.
Arsenal, as if they were not playing for the Champions League, were not active up front, Mohamed Elneny’s shot being the only exception. On the other hand, Wilson shot again, just missing the back post.
In the 80th minute, Newcastle even went three-on-one, but Jacob Murphy failed to finish. Five minutes later, it was insurance after all. Wilson was saved by Ramsdale, but he was short on Bruno Guimaraes’ finish.
Arsenal didn’t get the pressure they needed at the end and Ryan Fraser wasted one more great opportunity. So the Gunners have to win in the last round while hoping Tottenham lose to Norwich? Realistic chances? 5% at most…
