Will the queen of motorsport race in Madrid in the future? There’s a big question mark hanging over that at the moment, but the officials of the Spanish capital have expressed their clear interest! However, Barcelona has a contract with F1 until 2026.
Formula 1 currently already has one race in Spain, or rather in Catalonia. The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has a contract with the promoters and F1 until 2026.
However, according to Motorsport, minister Enrique Lopez recently sent a message to F1 CEO and president Stefano Domenicali saying that Madrid is bidding to allow the Spanish capital to host the Grand Prix.
“On behalf of the Madrid community, it is a pleasure to write to you to express our interest in hosting the Formula One Grand Prix in Madrid,” wrote Lopez, whose words were quoted by Motosport.
“In short, I would like to confirm our commitment to you and this project, as well as our willingness to sign the relevant contracts to promote the race and offer a great sporting and entertaining spectacle,” Lopez added.
He goes on to say that for Madrid, hosting a Formula 1 race would be a certain satisfaction. Lopez also believes that hosting a Grand Prix in Madrid would be a win-win situation for everyone, especially for all the institutions and companies involved in the development of F1.
Madrid’s statement thus comes at a time when Formula 1 is addressing the problems that have arisen regarding the organisation of this year’s race in Barcelona. According to the queen of motorsport, the promoters have completely failed in their organisation.
In fact, over 300,000 fans attended the race weekend in Barcelona this year, yet the promoters were not prepared for it. There were problems with transport or the organisation of the stands.
In any case, Formula 1 is now enjoying huge interest. Next year, the World Championship calendar will already include races in Las Vegas, Qatar and possibly South Africa. This will bring the queen of motorsport up to the maximum limit of 24 races per year under the Concorde Agreement.
