A bad investment can cost you dearly. Arda Turan, a former Barcelona and Atlético Madrid footballer, already knows this. He lost his life savings after falling for a con man.
Arda Turan had a rich career. After six years at Galatasaray in Turkey, he moved to Spain, specifically to Atlético Madrid. There, he developed into a key player over four years, leading to his move to Barcelona in 2015.
He didn’t fare so well in Catalonia, but he kept his five-year luxury contract, although he spent the last two years as a guest at Turkish side Basaksehir. He spent the last two years of his career at Galatasaray.
He made enough money in his career to live on until he died. But he’s currently broke.
It all happened just before his career ended in his native Galatasaray. Turan decided to invest his life savings, which amounted to 13 million euros, on the wrong horse.
He trusted a swindler who promised to multiply his money. But the Turkish representative never saw the money again, as the scammer disappeared with it.
But Turan is not the only one who was tricked by the bad trader. In fact, 18 Turkish footballers fell for him, including Fernando Muslera, the Galatasaray goalkeeper who invested 1.2 million euros.
The trial is currently underway in Istanbul and the accused is Secil Erzan, the head of the Istanbul-based Denizbank Levent subsidiary, according to Turkish media.
“He tricked me. He told me that whoever invests in this fund will make a big profit. I gave him more than 13 million euros. All the money I worked so hard for. Several years of work disappeared in a second,” Turan sighed in court.
