On Thursday, Slavia will play a rematch of the European Conference League semi-final against Linz in Sankt Polten. What did the Austrian team’s coach Andreas Wieland and striker Husein Balic say at the press conference?
Linz didn’t manage to win the first match of the semi-finals. Although the Slavie line-up resembled the eleven for the MOL Cup eighth finals due to several injuries, the Sešiovans did not give the Austrian side a sniff.
Slavia quickly took a 2:0 lead, from that moment on they controlled the game except for the passage after conceding a goal at 1:2 and finally won 4:1. Peter Olayinka, Ibrahim Traoré and winter signing Yira Sor scored twice.
“We can’t be too tactical. We have to make up for the loss in Prague. We will do that by scoring early. That will give us hope and then maybe we can do it.
If we put in a similar performance to the weekend, maybe we can even turn the score around. Anything is possible,” said coach Andreas Wieland at the press conference.
The two teams experienced significantly different weekends. Slavia did not make it through their league match, they conceded early in the match on the ploughed pitch of Slovan Liberec and failed to react. And it played more than an hour outnumbered after Lukáš Štetina was sent off.
On the other hand, Linz players made up for it with a big win. Tirol scored six goals and moved into the first place in the group for salvation. LASK still have nine rounds to go in the Austrian Bundesliga season.
“Of course the two teams are different, although I don’t want to put Tirol down in any way. We have to play the same way as we did at the weekend, we have to prevent Slavia from controlling the game. As you can see, if we can convert our chances, we are capable of scoring six goals,” Wieland continued.
Linz failed in all aspects in Eden. They were not able to match Slavia in terms of commitment, movement or tactical maturity. After the quickly conceded goal, it seemed as if the players themselves did not believe that anything could be done about the result.
Husein Balić scored the only goal for the visitors. The Austrian striker scored with a tight shot from outside the box to give his teammates confidence for the next ten minutes. However, it was Olayinka’s goal that broke it all for 3:1.
“We have to make up for what we failed to do in Prague. If we score the first goal quickly, anything is possible. It is possible to achieve miracles in football in these knockout fights. It’s definitely a chance to turn it around,” said the author of Linz’s only goal on Thursday.
