Remember the affair that caused a huge uproar in Italy in 2006? Back then, four clubs were involved in a corruption scandal – Juventus, AC Milan, Lazio Roma and Fiorentina. Now there are cases linked to very strange transfers involving one of the giants of Italian football.
The great corruption scandal of 2006 has shaken Italian football considerably. The former vice-president of the UEFA referees’ commission, Pierluigi Pairetto, was also involved in some way in match-fixing or illegal betting at the time.
The situation in Italy became even worse after it was discovered that the former Italian Interior Minister, Giuseppe Pisanu, was also involved in the affair. However, the consequences for all involved were justly harsh.
Juventus were relegated to the second league and lost two titles in 2004/05 and 2005/06. Lazio Roma and Fiorentina also went into the second league. Only AC Milan remained in Serie A, but in retrospect the club was deducted 44 points. This meant that the Rossoneri could not reach the European Cups.
Slowly but surely, another scandal is now emerging in Italy. The Feds have launched a major investigation into 62 very strange player transfers.
It is believed to be mainly about barter deals and capital gains. According to the Football Italia website, the Supervisory Committee for Serie A clubs has sent a detailed report to the prosecutor and the president of the FIGC (Italian Football Federation – ed.), Gabriele Gravina, to investigate the matters surrounding the transfers.
And according to the latest information, it is likely to be another scandal. But who is supposed to be involved in the emerging affair?
The first club mentioned in the investigation is SSC Naples. The latter sent four of its players to French side Lille, for a total of €20 million. However, two of them are currently in Serie C, one is in Serie D and the last player has remained in France without a commitment.
The thickest file the feds have on the table unfortunately belongs to Juventus. The latter is responsible for 42 strange transactions and transfers.
These transfers involved 21 players and totalled €90 million. But the big problem came when it was discovered that out of this 90 million, only three had changed hands.
The case is being handled by the FIGC prosecutor’s office, which has not yet initiated any official proceedings against the clubs. However, this is probably only a matter of time. Last year a similar scandal befell two Serie B clubs. It should be noted, both clubs later went bankrupt. We are talking about Chievo Verona and Cesena.
