Another reason to leave? Messi was again senselessly booed by PSG fans before the game. Do they even know what they want?
Lionel Messi comment. The best player in football history and this season also the best PSG player. Yet fans have booed him in recent weeks, and it was no different ahead of Sunday’s match against Olympique Lyon. Do they even know what they want?
Comment: Lionel Messi. The best player in football history and this season also sovereignly the best PSG player. Yet fans have booed him in recent weeks, and it was no different ahead of Sunday’s game against Olympique Lyon. Do they even know what they want?
PSG are sovereignly the biggest club in France at the moment, and they owe it mostly to money. It can afford to pay practically anyone. After all, this is probably one of the reasons why Lionel Messi arrived in Paris in the summer of 2021.
The Argentine idol came with a clear objective. To win the Champions League with PSG for the first time in history. But it didn’t happen in either his first or second season. In the first one, it was still understandable. Although Messi gave a great performance, it was clear that he needed some time to acclimatise.
Before the second season, there were rumours from members of the club’s management that we would see the best version of Messi in history. This, even considering his age, is probably not quite a reality, however, at 35 years old, he is one of the best footballers on the planet with his current form. If not still the best.
The newly crowned world champion is clearly PSG’s biggest draw this season. He scores goals, he passes them, he has won some PSG games outright on his own. But as mentioned, it didn’t work out in the Champions League again and the fans chose Messi as their target.
Rightly so? No. Messi was one of the few players who created anything at all in the double with Bayern. PSG failed as a team. Not just on the pitch, but certainly with the composition of the entire squad, which is extremely unbalanced and cannot win the Champions League in this form.
Do PSG fans know what they want?
After their Champions League exit, PSG fans in no small part wanted, for example, Lionel Messi to leave the team. They talked about him as a mercenary who doesn’t care about the team and who won’t make a significant contribution to the team.
However, all the statistical servers agree that Messi is the best PSG player this season. And while Kylian Mbappé is getting a round of applause, Messi was also booed on Sunday before the match against Olympique Lyon.
And that Mbappé should be the one who deserves the applause? Yes, he puts in good performances, but he is often absolutely unstable and throws away chances that Messi creates for him like a treadmill. And he’s certainly not alone in this. On the contrary.
Not to mention that as not long ago PSG fans were longing for Messi to leave, the current squeal is said to be due to the fact that Barcelona have confirmed contact about the Argentine’s possible return to Barcelona, according to the French media.
But the club’s management is essentially responsible for all of PSG’s failures. The transfer policy seems to have been conducted according to no concept. And having Messi in the team is simply not enough. After all, football is about the whole team, not just one player. Even if he is the best in history.
If Messi actually went back to Barcelona then, no wonder. He is still seen as an idol in Catalonia. At PSG, he receives nonsensical criticism from the fans, which is certainly not justified.
Not to mention the fact that when the target of criticism should be someone else entirely, such as the club’s management or the whole team, it is only Messi.
Moreover, PSG had plenty of time to extend Messi’s contract. That they didn’t address this well in advance? Again, that’s not the Argentine legend’s fault.
