Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali is in trouble again for betting. The former AC Milan player has now been accused of breaking FA betting rules in England. According to this accusation, Tonali also placed another 50 bets after his transfer to the Premier League.
Already in the first half of October last year, the Italian media started talking about a betting scandal involving more than a dozen Italian footballers. Among them were Nicolo Zaniolo (Aston Villa), Nicolo Fagioli (Juventus) and Sandro Tonali.
Tonali, in fact, in his last engagement in Italy, bet on the matches of his teams – Brescia and AC. Because of his betting on the games he played in, there was even talk of a three-year suspension. In the end, however, this speculation was not confirmed, fortunately for him.
Still, he is currently taking a break from football, with Tonali serving a ten-month sentence. This of course means that the Newcastle star will miss the upcoming Euros in Germany.
The punishment then includes an agreement that Tonali must undergo eight months of treatment for gambling addiction. He is also currently making 16 public appearances consecutively to make amends for his mistake and deter others from falling into the same trap.
But as the British media reports, that’s not all. Tonali has now been accused in England of breaking the ban on betting even after arriving at Newcastle, where he transferred from AC Milan last summer for 64 million euros.
Tonali in trouble again
BBC Sport reports that the Italian international made a total of 50 bets between 12 August and 12 October. That is, at a time when he was already a Newcastle player.
“Newcastle United notes the allegation of misconduct committed by Sandro Tonali in relation to an alleged breach of FA betting rules. Sandro remains fully compliant with the relevant investigations and has the full support of the club,” the club said on Thursday, quoted by BBC Sport.
Tonali will therefore definitely not be seen at this year’s Euros. But it is questionable whether he will receive another, worse punishment for breaking the rules.
