Injuries are taking a heavy toll on Real Madrid in the new season. Carl Ancelotti’s fourth key player in the starting line-up has been injured, this time it was the captain’s armband holder Daniel Carvajal who was ruled out.

The bad luck started before the start of the season when Thibaut Courtois tore the cruciate ligament in his knee during training. He had to have surgery and will miss the whole season.

Moreover, in the very first game, he was followed by first-choice stopper Eder Militao and did the exact same injury, also facing a nearly nine-month break.

To make matters worse, the team’s main star, Vinícius Junior, was injured in the duel with Celta Vigo. The young Brazilian injured a muscle and his absence was estimated at six weeks.

In Sunday’s duel against Real Sociedad, Dani Carvajal was one of the best players on the pitch. In the absence of Nacho, the team captain has been giving great performances this season, and in an interview with Movistar, he admitted that since he stopped eating gluten, all the injury problems he had have gone away.

And boom, he seems to have brought it on himself. He actually walked out of Tuesday’s training session, the cause being a muscle injury. He’ll miss not only Wednesday’s Champions League game against Union Berlin, but especially this weekend’s derby against Atlético Madrid.

Carlo Ancelotti now has two options. The natural replacement is Lucas Vázquez, but he is a converted right midfielder and although he is quality in the offensive department, the defensive department is not his strongest point.

So the Italian strategist can help himself with a reliable all-rounder and captain Nacho. The Real Madrid alumnus may be primarily a stopper, but paradoxically, he is more often found on the flanks of the defence when needed.
