Another case of suspected rape in the English Premier League. BBC Sport has learned that a 29-year-old footballer, who is expected to appear at the World Cup in Qatar, has been taken into custody on suspicion of raping a woman in her 20s.
BBC Sport has come forward with the news that the twenty-nine-year-old Premier League footballer has been arrested at his home in north London.
The man, who has not been named, was taken into custody on Monday morning where he remains for the time being. The reason is suspicion of rape.
“On July 4, an allegation of rape was reported to police involving a woman in her 20s. The alleged rape was alleged to have occurred in June 2022,” police said.
“Investigations into the circumstances are ongoing,” the statement continued. There is already speculation on social media as to who the footballer may be.
Another clue is that the footballer is to represent his country at the World Cup in Qatar. But until the name is known, there is no need to expose him publicly.
The Premier League has dealt with similar cases in the past, with Benjamin Mendy in jail and new allegations coming in all the time. Iceland’s Gylfi Sigursson has also been in trouble.
