Erling Haaland scored 40 goals in just 35 UEFA Champions League games, rewriting the record books. The Norwegian striker, who is still only 23 years old, is already 18th on the historic Champions League scorers‘ list in only his fifth season in the competition. And after surpassing Samuel Eto’o, Antoine Griezmann, Kaká and Wayne Rooney, he is now within sight of Sergio Agüero, Alessandro Del Piero and Neymar.
Leeds-born Haaland burst onto the Salzburg scene in 2019, becoming the first and so far only player to score a first-half hat-trick on his debut in the 6-2 win over Genk.
Scored in his first five Champions League appearances (a record eight goals in total). And he became only the third man to do so after Alessandro Del Piero and Diego Costa.
Haaland left for Dortmund after the group stage of the 2019/20 season and two goals in his first Champions League appearance for the club took him to double figures in the competition – after a then-record seven games.
Haaland has since set similar benchmarks for 15 goals (12 games), 20 goals (14) and following his transfer to Manchester City. In the summer of 2022, 25 goals (20), 30 goals (25) and 35 goals (27).
At the age of 22 years and 272 days, he was also the youngest player of that mark. Haaland’s goal in Game 5 against Leipzig in the 2023/24 season also made him the fastest (35 games) and youngest (23 years and 131 days) with 40 goals in the competition.
After breaking the record against Liverpool, the Citizens star notched his 50th goal in England’s top competition. In only his 48th game.
So just a few days later, with this brilliant feat, he once again showed us how far the boundaries can be pushed, by breaking another record yet again, in the most famous cup competition in the world.
