Wilfried Zaha was racially abused again after he and his teammates beat Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. The Crystal Palace star subsequently received several abusive and obscene messages via social media.
Zaha played a key role in the duel between Manchester City and Crystal Palace, which the London Eagles won 2-0 to surprise the reigning Premier League champions. The skilful winger scored the opening goal himself and also secured Laporte’s equaliser.
After the game, however, he received several racist slurs and threats in the news. The Ivory Coast representative subsequently posted the messages on his Instagram and asked the authorities to take racism more seriously than they have done so far.
From the messages Zaha received on social media, he selected some and shared them among his followers.
”I want this issue to be addressed. I’m not sending this message out into the world to get a million messages saying people are behind me and stuff like that,” Zaha said immediately after receiving the hate messages.
”My skin color has always been, is and will always be a real problem around the world. But that’s probably okay. I can tell you I’m black and I’m proud of it!”
Zaha, meanwhile, is going against the tide, having started refusing to kneel before matches since February, seeing it as a humiliating gesture. At first he accepted it and didn’t mind, but over time players started doing it deliberately and people forgot why footballers actually kneel before games.
”When I was growing up, my parents told me to always be proud to be black. I want to stay standing and refuse to kneel in front of anyone, ” the Crystal Palace winger recalled.
Zaha was named the star of the match against Manchester City and the goal he scored was his 50th in the Premier League.
