Another Arsenal exit?! Mourinho’s bid for Swiss midfielder fails
In the January transfer window, Arsenal chose a tactic of purging the squad, which was not very wise, given the current situation. Thus, the North London club cannot afford another key departure. Even José Mourinho failed with his bid to transfer Granit Xhaka.
In the January transfer window, Arsenal chose a tactic of purging the squad, which was not very wise, given the current situation. Thus, the North London club cannot afford another key departure. Even José Mourinho failed with his bid to transfer Granit Xhaka.
The Portuguese coach is an admirer of the Swiss midfielder. Mourinho failed with a transfer offer to the Italian capital in the summer and it seems that he will not see a successful end in the January transfer deadline either.
Mikel Arteta has already sent England international Ainsley Maitland-Niles on loan to AS Roma, leaving him with only three central midfielders in his current squad – Thomas Partey, Sambi Lokonga and the aforementioned Swiss.
The Portuguese strategist tried to acquire the 29-year-old Xhaka in the summer transfer window, but he clashed with Arsenal’s management with a £30 million offer, despite the fact that the player himself was in favour of a change of venue. Given the currently narrow squad, they don’t want to hear about interest from the Italian capital.
So for the rest of the January transfer window, Mourinho needs to let his appetite take over. However, negotiations on the Stadio Olimpico – Emirates Stadium route are likely to resume in the summer.
