Andy Murray returns to the Davis Cup. He will be joining the Great Britain team after three years
In 2015, he led his team to the title after 79 years, and three years ago, he made his last Davis Cup appearance in a win over Dutchman Griekspoor. Now Andy Murray has reappeared on Great Britain’s roster for the group stage of the prestigious tennis competition after a lengthy hiatus.
In recent years, the 35-year-old Scot has struggled with a hip injury, which has caused him to fall down the rankings. However, this season has been marked by a gradual move upwards for him, moving from 134th to his current 47th place in the singles rankings since the start of the year.
Thanks to his improved form, the thirty-five-year-old Ivan Lendl is not missing from captain Leon Smith’s nomination for the Davis Cup group stage. Murray’s teammates will be Cameron Norrie, Dan Evans and Joe Salisbury. One more name will be added.
It will be an interesting return for the three-time Grand Slam champion. Great Britain will challenge the USA, Kazakhstan and the Netherlands on home soil in Glasgow, Andy Murray’s hometown.
“Some of the best moments of my career came when I represented my country in Davis Cup, so to be part of the team again means a lot to me,” Eurosport quotes the former world number one, who also has two Olympic titles to her name.
“Having Andy in the team is a real boost,” admits Cameron Norrie, the world number 11 and current British number one. He also appreciates having Dan Evans, who would be a member of the winning squad in 2015, on the national team.
The group matches of this year’s Davis Cup, which the Czechs did not qualify for, will take place from 13 to 18 September. The final tournament in Málaga is scheduled for November 22-27. Andy Murray will play one more team event in London a week after the Davis Cup clashes in Glasgow. He is not missing from Björn Borg’s European selection for the Laver Cup.
