Andrey Rublev is a 25-year-old tennis player from Russia. He is currently ranked sixth in the ATP rankings. If he manages to dominate the Australian Open, he could move up to second place.
However, his start to the season has not been ideal. First, he lost to Roberto Bautista-Agut (6::4, 3::6, 4::6) in Adelaide and then he lost to Thanassi Kokkinakis (4::6, 6::3, 3::6). He is defending his 3rd round at the inaugural Grand Slam.
At the start of the tournament he took on Dominic Thiem in three sets. He followed that up with a win against Ruusuvuori, against whom he has lost only one set so far at the Australian Open. In the third round, he found a recipe against Daniel Evans.
On Monday he will face Holger Rune, a rising star. The nineteen-year-old from Denmark has been performing well and has even moved up to tenth in the ATP rankings.
His biggest Grand Slam success is his quarter-final appearance at last year’s French Open, where he fell to Casper Ruud, a later finalist. At the end of the season, he also performed well indoors (Paris, Stockholm – winner; Sofia, Basel – final).
The confidant of Patrick Mouratoglou is also unbeatable in the beginning of the new year. At the Australian open, where he dropped out in the first round last year, he took on Krajinovic, Cressy and Humbert without losing a set.
Rublev and Rune will clash for the second time, having been more successful in the first encounter. In November 2022, Rune was more successful, mainly due to the fact that he was able to turn away all six of his opponent’s break point opportunities.
But now I expect a triumph for Rublev, who is in a great frame of mind in that environment. He has more experience with similar matches, and this could also help him to a very valuable victory.
