Social networks have always been a place where people vent their anger. Recently, and particularly in the UK, there have been more and more cases of dark-skinned players being insulted online.

The last time such an incident happened was after the FA Cup 4th round match between Manchester United and Middlesbrough. The match ended 1-1 after 120 minutes.

Penalties were awarded and in the eighth series, young Swede Anthony Elanga hit the crossbar. The unconverted penalty sent Boro into the next round.

Several players, captain Harry Maguire, Phil Jones and Cristiano Ronaldo, consoled the team right on the pitch. The star Portuguese himself missed a penalty in the first half.

Many fans reacted to the 19-year-old Elangy’s failure in comments on United’s official Instagram account. They wrote inappropriate racist comments and used offensive emojis. Arsenal alumnus Jay-Emannuel Thomas pointed out the whole situation on his Twitter account.

No one should experience racist abuse on social media and we don’t tolerate it on our apps.”

In addition, Elanga has also received support from his teammates. Forward Marcus Rashford posted this on his Twitter account.

Manchester United coach Ralf Rangnick also commented on the situation, saying that Elanga was “shaken and very disappointed” after the game. He also said that the whole team will try to encourage him.
