Real Madrid played the first friendly of the new season. They beat AC Milan 3-2 at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles, trailing 0-2 at half-time. What did Carlo Ancelotti say after the game?

Real Madrid’s new season will bring huge changes. After fourteen years, the team’s top striker Karim Benzema has left the team and Los Blancos will have to learn to play without him.

Unless Kylian Mbappé, who has been the subject of much speculation, arrives, Real Madrid will probably move to a new system. The diamond formation, that is, with four central midfielders and two strikers, has already brought success to Real in the past.

In the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons, Zinedine Zidane built his team this way with a midfield of Casemiro – Kroos – Modric – Isco and an attacking duo of Ronaldo – Benzema. In both seasons, Real Madrid won the Champions League.

The arrival of Jude Bellingham and not replacing the attacking number one forces Ancelotti to return to the diamond. It is the English super-talent who is expected to take over the role of number ten, the understudy midfielder who will be in charge of linking the midfield with the attack.

“I liked the new system. But we have to change some things. It was a bit difficult for us to come from behind. We tried to play a bit more in the middle than on the flanks. I liked the system. Sometimes the pressing was not right, but my overall feeling is good,” Ancelotti said after the game.

As for the new signing from Dortmund, Ancelotti had nothing but words of praise. “Bellingham was in a good position and played a good game. The team has to get used to his quality. He is a fantastic player and will be very important. He is different from the other central midfielders we have. He adds something extra to the team,” the Italian strategist said.

However, talk of Kylian Mbappé’s arrival at the Santiago Bernabéu is currently rife. If the Frenchman does arrive, he would probably start at the tip of the attack, taking Real from a diamond back to a 4-3-3 formation.

Alternatively, Rodrygo could wait as a joker in some games and an offensive formation of Kroos – Camavinga – Valverde – Bellingham, Mbappé – Vinícius would promise a solid offensive spectacle.
