Real Madrid have a new Marcelo. With injuries to left-backs Ferland Mendy and David Alaba, Eduardo Camavinga has had to step in at full-back unconventionally and is doing fantastically. Coach Carlo Ancelotti jokes that he will keep him in his new position.

Carlo Ancelotti had to start dealing with a major crisis last week Thursday. In the match against Atlético Madrid, left back Ferland Mendy was injured in the first half and had to be substituted. But when the Real Madrid coach looked back to the bench, he had no one to put in.

Another left-back, David Alaba, is still out on sick leave and the third all-rounder who could play there, Nacho, was already gluing the right edge of the defence after the injured Dani Carvajal. So Ancelotti pulled central midfielder Eduardo Camavinga out of necessity and sent him to the left edge of defence.

And the French youngster handled the role brilliantly. Even in midfield he takes the ball fantastically and defends brilliantly, doubling those skills at left-back and thanks to his speed and great fitness he can also support the attack excellently.

Camavinga thus started here on Sunday against Real Sociedad and last night against Valencia. On both occasions, he was one of the best players of the match and the La Liga commentator referred to him yesterday as the new Marcelo.

On average, Camavinga takes 12.8 balls per game and wins 8.2 duels. That’s the most of any player in Europe.

And after the Valencia game, Ancelotti joked about the French midfielder’s new role. “Camaving doesn’t really like playing at left-back, but I do,” the experienced Italian laughed at the press conference.

He praised the 20-year-old’s performance on the left flank and even admitted that he now has a dilemma whether to play the now-healed Alaba at left-back or continue with Camavinga.
