Ancelotti after defeat to Sheriff: We are more sad than worried, we just didn’t give chances and we were unlucky
Real Madrid had a shameful night at the Santiago Bernabéu when they lost to Sheriff Tiraspol. What did Carlo Ancelotti have to say after the game about the first loss of the season?
Real Madrid had a really embarrassing night when they lost to Sheriff Tiraspol at their stadium. What did Carlo Ancelotti have to say about the first loss of the season after the game?
Since 30 January, Real Madrid have played 30 competitive matches in which they have notched up only one loss, in the Champions League semi-final against Chelsea of London. He has also played against Barcelona, Liverpool, Atlético Madrid and Inter Milan.
Since the loss to Chelsea, Los Blancos have not lost 12 competitive matches in a row. And as it sometimes happens in football, the defeat comes when you least expect it. Carlo Ancelotti’s charges succumbed to Sheriff Tiraspol in the Champions League, with the Moldovan side shooting out the winner in the 90th minute.
Sheriff played with incredible dedication, the players jumped into shots, they also had a lot of luck. They scored two goals from two shots on target and were pinned to their own net for almost the entire second half, surviving several Real Madrid chances.
“We are more sad than worried because we should have got three points. The team played well, with great intensity, but small details cost us the game. We had a lot of chances, but we should have been more accurate in the last 30 metres. It is difficult to explain this defeat after such a game,” Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti did not understand at a press conference.
But there is something good in everything bad. And the Italian coach sees it the same way, saying his team can learn from this defeat.
“It can be a good lesson for the future. Now we are talking about a defeat that the team did not deserve for its performance. Sheriff defended well, they were concreted at the back. We combined well and broke their line, with a lot of centres flying into the box. But the little details cost us the game. We lost because we were very unlucky,” Ancelotti recalled the Merengues’ missed chances.
Real entered the match with a 4-4-2 formation with Hazard as a free agent under the spike behind Benzema. How did Ancelotti see his performance?
“He played well, combined well with Benzema and had chances to score. It was a nice shot but the goalkeeper did a great job. The only thing missing was a goal,” the 62-year-old coach said of Hazard.
